Don't take anything I say as gospel, I don't add nearly enough snake oil to my hifi recipes :-)

TD-160 turntable. I bought this turntable from Cash Converters for R35. Fitted a new belt, and a Shure ME75EJ cartridge. Sounds great. |

![]() | HD720 CD player. I bought this CD based mostly on this rave review by Deon Schoeman. Well, it didn't do much for me, and I later learned that the DAC used, the Burr-Brown PCM1710, is widely regarded as the worst DAC that Burr-Brown ever made. That lead me to making some unflattering comments, but I was politely asked to remove them, so I did. But be careful of magazines where the adverts support the reviews and vice-versa. |

1130 preamplifier Two 3225PE amplifiers (I had four, sold one on to the ex, one was stolen) and a 3240PE. All bought from CapeAds. |
"Frankenstein" bookshelf speakers | My father had a set of Aiwa SC-51 speakers, which we eventually played to bits. Blown tweeters and scratchy voice coils. I bought two generic woofers and two tweeters from Zakspeed, and fitted them, using the existing crossover. Sounded horrible, because the (dome) tweeters couldn't reach down far enough to suit the crossover. Replaced them with small coned speakers with whizzer coils. I must say, this combination does not sound bad at all. |
